How to Replace a Window
Posted in Window Parts, on August 12, 2020
Homeowners looking to replace a window may try to do it themselves. This can be a great option to save money and time. If you are new to window replacements, we have helped outline the entire process for you. However, if you require any truth window parts or are having difficulty with the replacement, it may be time to call in professional help.
1. Measure the Old Window
To replace your window, you will need to know the appropriate dimensions for your new window and parts. Start by measuring the window that needs to be replaced from the inside of your home. The width is measured from one side of the window jamb to the other. Make sure to measure the width at the bottom, middle, and top to determine whether the window has warped over time. The height should then be measured from the inside of the sill to the inside of the top window jamb.
2. Remove Trim and Prepare Window for Removal
Start by using a pry bar or utility knife to delicately remove the window stops and trim. Make sure that you do not destroy the stops in the process, you will need them for later.
3. Remove Sash and Prepare Sill
This process will help you remove the old window and prepare the sill for the new window. You will want to remove the sash and then cut any cords or chains away from the window. Once the outside sash is removed, prepare the inside of the sill and window jambs. This should include sanding the wood and patching any holes.
4. Dry-Fit Window
Before doing anything permanent, start by placing the new window in the sill to see how it will fit. This will give you a good idea of how much caulking and adjusting will be necessary.
5. Install New Window
To install the window, start by removing the plastic packing clips that are in place to protect the window during transit. Then caulk the sill with a ½ inch of sealant before putting the window in place. Tap shims in place and screw the mounting screws in at the top and bottom of each jamb.
6. Fit and Test the Window
Test your new window sashes to make sure that the sliding process is smooth. This is where things get tricky. If the sliding is not smooth, you may need to adjust either the screws or the shims. Then apply the final caulking when you are confident in your new window’s operation.
