Awning windows are typically hinged at the top, and open to the outside (outward). This allows for great ventilation even during a light rain storm. Awning windows are fitted with awning window hardware that makes for easy opening and closing.

While awning windows are similar to casement windows, there’s also a difference. Casement windows are side-hinged and open outwards (left or right). Awning windows are top-hinged and made for openings where width is greater than height.

Choosing Hinges and Locks for an Awning Window

Awning window parts must support the sash while allowing it to open outward from the bottom and close evenly against the frame. One available option is the awning and casement Shoe Design hinge, which is rated for sash weights of up to 140 pounds and offers 240 pounds of pull-out resistance. These specifications can make the hinge suitable for heavier window assemblies when its dimensions and geometry match the original hardware.

When comparing awning window hinges, check the track length, arm configuration, mounting-hole locations, sash weight, and left- or right-hand orientation where applicable. A hinge that looks similar may still alter sash travel or alignment if its geometry differs from the original.

Awning window locks also need to match the existing keeper position and mounting pattern. If a sash closes but does not pull firmly against the weather seal, inspect the lock, keeper, hinges, and sash alignment before deciding which component requires replacement.
